Running along the wall on the west side of the Old City of Jerusalem.
The wallon the west side of the old city. Notice how it is built right on the bedrock. In many places the bedrock is part of the wall. This wall was built in 1540 but much of the wall is built in the same location previous walls had been built.
This wall would have been the west side of Herod's palace which would have stood on the other side of this wall.
The west wall of the city. The citidel is on the other side of the wall. This was always the location of the fortress that defended the northern end of the western ridge. The cars are driving up a road that follows the Hinnom Valley on the west side of Jerusalem.
Inside the Joppa Gate on the west side of the city is the location that alwyas served as the fortress. Here is the base of one of the three towers Herod had built here to defend the city on this western ridge that has a natural defense from the Hinnom Valley to the west and the south.
This is the base of the tower named after Herod's brother, Phasael.

The Jaffa (Joppa) gate is on the west side.
