Matthew 5:9

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God."

"Peacemakers"

  1. End hostilities
  2. The word "peacemakers" is only used here in the NT
  3. These hostilities could be: - international, - internal personal, - between God and man, - between man and man
  4. "peacemakers" is an activity and produces results. This is actively engaging in a hostile environment to resolve the conflict.
  5. It is not the word "peace" or "peaceful" or a mere disposition.
  6. This is a quality of discipleship that results from the previous beatitudes such as being: - meek, - poor in spirit, -pursuing righteousness, -merciful.  These combine together to create a disciple who can be a peacemaker. (Note the importance of pursuing righteousness without becoming legalistic and unmerciful.)
  7. Galatians 5:19 describes the works of the flesh as including these traits that are far from being "peacemakers: hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy. The fruit of the Spirit are: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness and self-control = all qualities that are conducive for creating peace.
  8. This "peacemaking" is unidentified in this verse, so it is not just one kind or in one dimension. It is a character trait or a character quality.
  9. But, this "peacemaking" is not appeasement. Appeasement is not peacemaking. Appeasement is not Christian, it is not godly, it is not righteous and it is not meek.
  10. Matthew 10:34 - Jesus said he did not come to bring peace, but a sword.
  11. Matthew 5:10 - the next Beatitude says those who live this way will be persecuted
  12. We do live in an evil world that will not want God's terms of peace. The evil world only wants appeasement. This peacemaking is not appeasement and will lead to irresolvable conflict between God and evil.

                  a. Jesus made peace between God and man (Ephesians 2:14-20)

                  b. The result was the potential for peace between man and man.

                  c. The gospel then promotes peace.

                  d. Christians advance peace and not division, bitterness, strife, etc.

"Will Be"

·         is in the passive form and probably indicates it is God who is the one doing the "calling" you sons of God.

"Called"

·         this is not just the calling of a name or the assigning of a name

·         "called" means these people ARE this and they have made this their own character. The ARE sons of God

"sons of God"

·         This is a condition that goes beyond "discipleship"

·         sons of God refers to a relationship and to a character shared with God

·         This is probably not the same use of the phrase "sons of God" that Paul and John use to refer to our new life or our born again condition. This is a reference to the matured character of the born again believer.

·         "son of ____" indicates the nature of the father or the character of something in a person. This phrase is used in Matthew several times: 8:12 to refer to the sons of the kingdom; 9:15 to refer to the sons of the wedding hall; 13:38 to refer to the sons of the evil one; 23:31 to refer to the sons of those who killed the prophets

Psalm 34:14 and First Peter 3:8-14

Romans 12:17-21 Peace, overcome evil with good

The kingdom of peace is coming, but even today many oppose it and will be defeated by this kingdom.
